Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel

Distinguished Funeral Director Services To Half Moon Bay

Qualifying as a historical landmark – having been established in 1905 in what was then known as “Spanishtown” (named after the early settlers a half-century earlier),  Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel continues to provide funeral director services to families along a 50-mile stretch of scenic California coastline.

The funeral home began under the ownership of the Francis family from 1905-1913 and was originally located on Main Street, just around the corner from its current location at 645 Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay, CA.

Elderly couple walking togetherIn 1913, Manuel and Minnie Dutra assumed ownership of the business and soon contracted to have a new funeral home built. In 1928 Manuel Dutra personally designed additions to the funeral home including the award-winning exterior. Its magnificent art deco trim, stucco finish and stone-base trim create what remains today as its zig-zag, Moderne structure.

Upon his brother’s death in 1936, Mac Dutra and his wife Bridget established a partnership with their sister-in-law Minnie. Shortly thereafter, Mac and Bridget became sole owners of the funeral home from 1940-1963. It was during this time that the City of Half Moon Bay (the oldest town in San Mateo County) was incorporated in 1959.

Working as an assistant for the Dutras, Murray Randleman subsequently assumed ownership of the funeral home in 1963 and continued service until 1982 when the business transferred ownership to Greg and Linda Miller.

Greg Miller’s civic leadership and extensive community involvement has rewarded him with an excellent reputation as well as an ever-increasing and loyal clientele. Both Greg and his brother Chris remain active today in faithfully assisting the funeral and cremation service needs of the coastside community.

Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel is currently under the ownership of John F. Crosby, whose career in funeral service began over 30 years ago at his family’s funeral home, Crosby-N. Gray & Co. in nearby Burlingame. The Crosby family has served the San Mateo Peninsula community for four generations. We are pleased to have maintained the tradition of a family-owned and operated funeral home.

We Invite Comparison

Almost every day we meet with families who are not prepared to make a good decision about the choice of a funeral director. Important considerations about choosing a funeral home should include:

  • Quality of the funeral home’s facilities
  • Reputation in the community
  • Friendliness
  • Knowledge and experience of the staff
  • Willingness to accommodate your needs
  • Sensitivity to each culture and faith
  • Wide and flexible ranges of funeral and cremation service options
  • Merchandise at fair prices.

An important factor to consider when choosing a funeral director is the funeral home’s reputation within the community. Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel is and has been a locally owned, independent funeral home actively serving the Half Moon Bay community for over 100 years.

As a privately-owned funeral home with long-term community involvement, we are better able to assist you with your choices in comparison to conglomerate or corporate-owned funeral providers. Many corporate or “chain” funeral and cremation service providers offer limited types of services and inflated prices. Our funeral directors offer personalized care and attention that you can depend on.

We invite you to visit the Miller-Dutra funeral home in Half Moon Bay, where you will be warmly welcomed, your wishes will be listened to, and questions answered with the kindness and helpfulness that are hallmarks of our service.
